I have started this business because I am sick of seeing and hearing about people getting taken advantage of by greedy contractors.
It is very unfortunate that this happens but it does happen. The majority of the time, this is due to a lack of knowledge. People do not know enough about their plumbing systems which makes it easy for a contractor to come in and take advantage.
Tips to avoiding the bad contractors:
- Always get a second opinion! Do not think just because someone came out to your house, you then are required to use them. If you think there is a chance someone is trying to overcharge, call another plumber.
- Always ask for a license number. Plumbers are required to be licensed in the state of Kentucky and they are required to keep that license on them whenever they are working. There are a lot of companies out there that will send out a guy, who has a couple weeks of experience, in a truck by himself. They do not know what they are doing and many times, are more harmful than helpful.
- It is a safe bet that a large company that sends a salesman to your house before the actual plumber comes out, is going to overcharge. The fact is, those companies are paying for the plumber to do the work, the salesman to come sell the job, and a lot of advertising. All of that overhead has to be paid for somehow. They have a nice display that is proven to work and it typically makes the customer feel safe that their plumbers will do a great job. Just because a company is large, does not mean that they provide quality work.
Remember, knowledge is power. The more you know, the safer you are when a salesman walks through the door and tries to convince you, you need something repaired or replaced.
